Expert Neuro Physio Led Groups

You’re feeling a bit stuck…

Perhaps you’re wanting to work to rebuild after a neurological event that changed your life, or are feeling like your world is becoming more restricted and want to turn things around. You’re ready to put the time, effort and energy into doing this but need a little expert help and guidance to show you the way. Let me help.

Everyone who makes contact will receive a free 20-minute screening consultation to see whether Upton Neuro Physio is best placed to support their needs.

“Teamwork makes the dream work”.

Working out with others in a similar situation to you, provides a level of motivation and encouragement that you may not feel when exercising alone.

The group-based rehab sessions delivered by Upton Neuro Physio are kept small.

This is to ensure that attendees receive individualised feedback, and that clients are sufficiently challenged to really feel the benefits of each exercise.

What to expect

The groups are delivered by an expert neuro physiotherapist at Upton by Chester Pavilion, a beautiful, accessible space with protected parking within a lush park.

The room has air conditioning and underfloor heating, so we can maintain the right temperature for exercise, all year round. I have a strict infection control policy and all equipment is cleaned between client use and the Pavilion’s amenities are all fully wheelchair accessible.

Groups delivered by Becca

a class for adults who have minor balance difficulties

Steady Eddies

This class is suitable for people who are still active, accessing the community, are often fit - but if they are honest with themselves, they are starting to lose confidence in their balance. They may accept the arm of a loved one when walking outdoors (and they may now rely on that support) or they may have fallen/ tripped over and are now nervous about doing certain tasks, or avoiding them altogether.

Why provide a targeted balance training exercise programme at this stage?

We know, that these early compensation strategies are the start of a trajectory where people may become a greater falls risk (with associated increased risk of injury). Often people have falls rehab when heavily reliant on walking aids, when physically deconditioned and housebound, and/or when they have sustained an injury as a result of a fall (that is, they have a substantial balance difficulties). We can get in earlier: intervention based on the early warning signs may turn things around before balance difficulties are embedded and so that people regain the confidence to enjoy the activities that otherwise they would avoid.

The details

  • For people with mild balance difficulties

  • People may or may not have a neuro diagnosis

  • The class involves rehabilitation indoors and outdoors every week, so bring outer-layers/ appropriate footwear to match the weather!

  • Multi-tasking, reaction training, sensory and strength training are key components

  • We finish each class with 5 minutes’ mindfulness

  • ’I went to the Chester Zoo Lanterns experience last weekend. It was dark, people were bumping into me, the floor surface was uneven. I would NEVER have done that before Steady Eddies.’

    A SUPER STEADY EDDY

specifically designed for people with Parkinson's

Parkinson’s in the Park

This class will be focused on younger people with Parkinson's, and/or soon after diagnosis. They will likely have moderate to good fitness, may still be working, may be juggling various life responsibilities, and want to stay at the top of their game!

The focus of this weekly class is high intensity exercise for brain protection, larger than life movements, fine tuning balance reactions, optimising posture and feeling great.

The details

The classes are held in the middle of the day, so that working people with Parkinson's can dip out to exercise in their lunchbreak and feel the buzz for the afternoon. I promise to inject fun into each session as enjoyment and community are a big part of the Upton Neuro Physio ethos.

  • For people with early Parkinson’s symptoms soon after diagnosis +/- Young Onset Parkinson’s

  • Exercises are PD Warrior and similar strategy informed: exercising with large amplitude movements, timed to music, challenging balance reactions alongside high-intensity cardio for brain protection

  • We finish each class with 5 minutes’ mindfulness

  • ’I really enjoyed it. I can see it really working to address my symptoms. I feel great.’

PARKINSON’S IN THE PARK GROUP PARTICIPANT

designed for people who have had a neurological event like a stroke and have ongoing hand and arm difficulties

GRASP Neuro-Hand Rehab Class

This class is aimed at people who have some purposeful movement in the hand (i.e. the hand moves when they try to move it, rather than, for example, when sneezing) following a neurological event like a stroke or brain injury. They want to do exercise to build strength, improve sensation and allow the brain to reorganise after the initial damage has occurred (neuroplasticity is the technical term).

The name has significance as ‘GRASP’ stands for ‘Graded Repetitive Arm Supplementary Program’, and is a well-known, evidence-based rehab programme devised in Canada, for hand and arm training following a neurological event such as a stroke.

The programme will be primarily based on GRASP exercises, but also influenced by other evidence-based rehab strategies, particularly Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT), sensory integration rehabilitation, aerobic exercise promotion and bilateral arm training.

It is an hour-long, chair-based exercise programme and family members/carers can stay so that they can support their loved ones with their exercises at home. Chat and community building is positively encouraged to create a friendly environment and maintain motivation.

The details

  • For people with hand and/or arm difficulties as the result of a neuro event

  • Exercises are targeted towards building strength, sensation and control of the hand and arm

  • A chair-based class and people can stay in their wheelchair if they prefer

  • A carer/family member can stay for the session
