Pregnancy to parenthood: the neuro twist

Exercising can be tricky during pregnancy with a neuro condition like multiple sclerosis (MS) or functional neurological disorder (FND).

Fatigue, limb weakness, balance difficulties - it can all make a typical pregnancy exercise class feel out of reach. You want to be active and know that you are doing the right exercises, at the right intensity for your changing body whilst respecting your neuro symptoms. Let me help.

“Let choice whisper in your ear and love murmur in your heart. Be ready. Here comes life.”

Maya Angelou

My Pregnancy Plus services have been developed to ensure that women with neuro conditions have equitable access to an active pregnancy.

When I saw that pregnant women with neuro conditions and complex needs often did not have access to exercise groups during pregnancy, I wanted to provide a solution. So that they too could enjoy the benefits of an active pregnancy, and meet similar mums-to-be on a similar journey.

Everyone who makes contact will receive a free 20-minute screening consultation to see whether Upton Neuro Physio is best placed to support their needs.

Why Modified Pregnancy Pilates?

The benefits of maintaining light to moderate exercise in pregnancy are well known. For women with a low-risk pregnancy*, exercise during pregnancy is associated with:

  • reduced risk of complications during pregnancy, including lower back and pelvic girdle pain, insomnia and obesity

  • faster recovery after the birth

  • reduced risk of anxiety and/or depression

Modified pilates is a well-established, low impact style of exercising that addresses whole body strength and conditioning. Pilates also focuses on strengthening the core muscles (those supporting bump) and the pelvic floor too. Pilates has been deemed safe and effective during pregnancy, as well as for managing neuro symptoms making it a natural choice for this programme.

Upton Neuro Physio’s virtual, adapted, NeuroNatal Pilates will be tailored to the group, with rest breaks and opportunities to chat, to build your tribe.

* A low-risk pregnancy means no factors that would place the pregnancy at risk of complications, as determined by the obstetrician.
